Soon To Be Gone by Capt. Steven Ellison, MD
A Military Doctor

This should be required reading in every school and college in our country. This Captain, an Army doctor, deserves a medal himself for putting this together. If you choose not to pass it on, fine, but I think you will want to, after you read it.

I am a doctor specializing in the Emergency Departments of the only two military Level One-Trauma Centers, both in San Antonio , TX and they care for civilian Emergencies as well as military personnel. San Antonio has the largest military retiree population in the world living here. As a military doctor, I work long hours and the pay is less than glamorous. One tends to become jaded by the long hours, lack of sleep, food, family contact and the endless parade of human suffering passing before you. The arrival of another ambulance does not mean more pay, only more work. Most often, it is a victim from a motor vehicle crash.

Often it is a person of dubious character who has been shot or stabbed. With our large military retiree population, it is often a nursing home patient. Even with my enlisted service and minimal combat experience in Panama , I have caught myself groaning when the ambulance brought in yet another sick, elderly person from one of the local retirement centers that cater to military retirees. I had not stopped to think of what citizens of this age group represented.

I saw ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ I was touched deeply. Not so much by the carnage, but by the sacrifices of so many. I was touched most by the scene of the elderly survivor at the graveside, asking his wife if he’d been a good man. I realized that I had seen these same men and women coming through my Emergency Dept. and had not realized what magnificent sacrifices they had made. The things they did for me and everyone else that has lived on this planet since the end of that conflict are priceless.

Situation permitting, I now try to ask my patients about their experiences. They would never bring up the subject without the inquiry. I have been privileged to an amazing array of experiences, recounted in the brief minutes allowed in an Emergency Dept. encounter. These experiences have revealed the incredible individuals I have had the honor of serving in a medical capacity, many on their last admission to the hospital.

There was a frail, elderly woman who reassured my young enlisted medic, trying to start an IV line in her arm. She remained calm and poised, despite her illness and the multiple needle-sticks into her fragile veins. She was what we call a ‘hard stick.’ As the medic made another attempt, I noticed a number tattooed across her forearm. I touched it with one finger and looked into her eyes. She simply said, ‘ Auschwitz .’ Many of later generations would have loudly and openly berated the young medic in his many attempts. How different was the response from this person who’d seen unspeakable suffering.

Also, there was this long retired Colonel, who as a young officer had parachuted from his burning plane over a Pacific Island held by the Japanese. Now an octogenarian, he had a minor cut on his head from a fall at his home where he lived alone. His CT scan and suturing had been delayed until after midnight by the usual parade of high priority ambulance patients. Still spry for his age, he asked to use the phone to call a taxi, to take him home, and then he realized his ambulance had brought him without his wallet. He asked if he could use the phone to make a long distance call to his daughter who lived 7 miles away. With great pride we told him that he could not, as he’d done enough for his country and the least we could do was get him a taxi home, even if we had to pay for it ourselves. My only regret was that my shift wouldn’t end for several hours, and I couldn’t drive him myself.

I was there the night M/Sgt Roy Benavidez came through the Emergency Dept. for the last time. He was very sick. I was not the doctor taking care of him, but I walked to his bedside and took his hand. I said nothing. He was so sick, he didn’t know I was there. I’d read his Congressional Medal of Honor citation and wanted to shake his hand. He died a few days later.

The gentleman who served with Merrill’s Marauders,

the survivor of the Bataan Death March,

the survivor of Omaha Beach ,

the 101 year old World War I veteran.

The former POW held in frozen North Korea

The former Special Forces medic – now with non-operable liver cancer

the former Viet Nam Corps Commander.

I may still groan when yet another ambulance comes in, but now I am much more aware of what an honor it is to serve these particular men and women.

I have seen a Congress who would turn their back on these individuals who’ve sacrificed so much to protect our liberty. I see later generations that seem to be totally engrossed in abusing these same liberties, won with such sacrifice.

It has become my personal endeavor to make the nurses and young enlisted medics aware of these amazing individuals when I encounter them in our Emergency Dept. Their response to these particular citizens has made me think that perhaps all is not lost in the next generation.

My experiences have solidified my belief that we are losing an incredible generation, and this nation knows not what it is losing. Our uncaring government and ungrateful civilian populace should all take note. We should all remember that we must ‘Earn this.’

Written By CAPT. Steven R. Ellison, M.D. US Army

If it weren’t for the United States Military,
there’d be NO United States of America!

Steven Ellison, MD
A MILITARY DOCTOR

And now as you have finished reading this, our Congress that enjoys
their free medical care are in the process of charging these people for their medical care and at the same time possibly reducing their retirement pay. A typical political “thank you.”

This should be required reading in every school and college in our country. This Captain, an Army doctor, deserves a medal himself for putting this together. If you choose not to pass it on, fine, but I think you will want to, after you’ve read it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Victorious Project presents A Ride to the Wall – the 25TH Anniversary of veterans’ national road trip sponsored by Northern California Road Trip Bar & Grill.
Woodland, California – April 3, 2012 – On Saturday, April 28th, 2012, from noon to 8pm, Road Trip Bar & Grill in Capay Valley, California will be hosting a benefit for Fueled by the Fallen. A 501(C)3 non-profit organization, Fueled by the Fallen was started by Kevyn Major Howard, “Rafterman” from Stanley Kubrick’s blockbuster film Full Metal Jacket. “In 2007, I was watching the nightly news as they announced that twelve died this day and seven that day,” Howard remembers. “I woke up one morning and challenged myself to name just one person who had died for my freedom. I couldn’t.”
Along with life-long drag racer and former National Go Kart Champion Chuck Spiker, Howard created a memorial car – a 1963 Nova – and created a ten-second quarter mile door slammer drag car representing fallen Marines from Iraq and Afghanistan. “Maybe I can get people who look upon this race car, with the names of 867 fallen Marines, to remember just one name. If I can do that, I have accomplished my mission,” shares Howard.
Today, Fueled by the Fallen has a number of memorial cars, including a cruiser featuring the names of 477 Los Angeles County peace officers who have fallen in action since 1850. And in May, a Fueled by the Fallen vehicle will be accompanying Harry Bostard, a Vietnam War veteran, as he makes his way across the country on the Air Force bike – one of five motorcycles representing each branch of the military. Bostard will be joining fellow Vietnam War veterans for the 25th anniversary of Rolling Thunder and celebrating 30 years of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC. “I get an immense feeling of freedom when I am out there with my knees in the breeze. That is what we fought for – freedom; even if we were not given a hero’s welcome when we returned home,” exclaims Bostard.
Capturing this momentous event will be accomplished by the use of “the world’s most versatile camera,” the GoPro® camera. Featured in an upcoming documentary, Presented by The Victorious Project®, viewers will be able to experience this unprecedented journey through the eyes of the riders. “With GoPros mounted on Bostard’s bike and helmet, you’ll be a part of this cross-country procession. We’re pleased to have the support of Road Trip Bar & Grill, Belt Drives Limited, and GoPro® promoting this journey and the non-profits who serve our veterans,” cites Gerald Macias, Executive producer for The Victorious Project®.
This is your chance to personally meet Harry Bostard, and Brad Masterson, a new breed of kustomizer who stays true to old school and learned at a very early age from the masters – George Barris and Bill Hines. Joining Bostard and Masterson and the Road Trip will be Nic Ashby, SEMA award winner and owner of LDRSHIP designs and RockStarGarage.
“Our family has always been part of the military, and Road Trip Bar and Grill is honored to be part of The Victorious Project®, Fueled by the Fallen, and Rolling Thunder – A Ride to the Wall. Stop by the Road Trip Bar and Grill from noon to 8pm on April 28th to show your support for our nation’s heroes as they begin their journey to DC,” invite Jerry and Paula Tackett, owners of Road Trip.

A small group gathered at Friends and Company in Madison on Feb. 24, all in an effort to support Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day (WHVVD), an organization built to embrace veterans by improving the welfare of the U.S. service men and women, as well as putting an end to the homelessness of veterans.

The get-together was attended by television’s Repo Man Lou Pizzaro; actor and photographer Kevyn Major Howards; documentary producer, writer and playwright Alfred Lugo; and founder of the vet hunter project Joe Leal. Founders of WHVVD Jose Ramos, a Vietnam medic; and Steve Kreider, a master sergeant and program coordinator for the Connecticut event, were also there to celebrate, as well as Hocon Gas’s William Raccio, who is the car and bike show coordinator for the annual event. Ted Aub, state coordinator for the National League of POW/MIA Families and chief political liaison and entertainment coordinator, also attended.

So how did this project all begin?

In 2004, Ramos was riding his bicycle from California to Washington to campaign for California’s WHVVD. After thousands of letters sent to congress and the president, that state began recognizing the day on March 30, 2008, with a successful celebration of more than 4,000 people. Then in 2010, former Connecticut governor M. Jodi Rell announced the designating March 30 as WHVVD in Connecticut. Connecticut and California are the only two states that recognize the day.

“It started by a chance meeting. California is where it all started. Steve Kreider is the founder on the east coast and Jose Ramos is California’s founder. Steve met him on a cross-country bicycle ride for vets and brought the concept to Connecticut,” Raccio explained. “That was two years ago and that’s how that friendship started. That’s also how the idea of Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans came to Connecticut. “

On Feb. 25, these organizers, as well as dozens of veterans, family members, and local politicians, met at the Courtyard Marriot in Cromwell to raise money for the second annual WHVVD event.

“It’s basically a benefit dinner. I’m excited we have Senator Blumenthal showing up we have Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman showing up and State Senator Ed Meyer,” said Kreider, the Connecticut founder of the event. “Its great to have—I was lucky when I got to Connecticut in 2010 to meet such a great network of people that are so eager to help out and put this together- they make it really easy.”

A portion of the money raised will also go toward Vet Hunters, a group working to identify and help homeless veterans.

“These guys from tonight are part of Vet Hunters. What we’re doing is were assisting, finding, locating, and getting services for our veterans who are living in cars, tents, and on the street trying to get them the services they need,” Aub said. “Connecticut has the second highest homeless veteran population in the U.S. We also have accelerating suicide rate among returning veterans from both women and men.”

The actual celebration will occur on May 19 at Veterans Park in Shelton from 11 a.m. through 6 p.m. The entire community is invited to participate. The event is free, with live music, custom cars and motorcycles, food vendors and entertainment for the whole family. Visit www.ctwhvvd.com, for more information and also to donate to this cause.

“It’s all about awareness—we want to raise the level of awareness of the issues that are going on and how they’re being dealt with. Of course our primary focus has been Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans, but everybody is from the same boat so to speak, just different time eras, and we don’t discriminate against time,” Aub said.

Fueled By The Fallen – Slideshow
Posting Date: 02/23/2012

By Barbara Ellestad

the Fallen car to Justin Goodsell, MPD Traffic
Division officer. Photo by Barbara Ellestad.

Chances are you’ve seen a highly decorated, souped-up car around Mesquite the last few weeks. If you have, that would be Steve Elliott behind the wheel of a 2010 Camaro that’s part of a fleet of cars honoring those killed on Sept. 11, 2001.

Founded by Kevyn Major Howard who played ‘Rafterman’ in the movie ‘Full Metal Jacket,’ the organization Fueled by the Fallen, has designed four similar cars, each one dedicated to a specific group of people who died in the terrorists attacks on the U.S. in 2001.

Elliott pilots the car dedicated to the group who died in one of the Twin Towers in New York City. Another car honors those in the second Twin Tower, one for the First Responders, one for the Pentagon, and the fifth car honors those who were on American Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.

The names of those lost are painted on the cars as a way to remember the tragedy.

“I’m here for a couple days and then I’ll be back in town off and on during the racing season,” Elliott explained. When he’s not in Mesquite, he’s on the road with his memorial car visiting National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) racing events around the country. “At least one of the five cars will attend all 23 events this season with the NHRA.”

“We’re working on teaming up with the Mesquite Police Department to take this car and their show car to the Virgin Valley High School for a special program,” Elliott explained.

Indeed, Justin Goodsell, MPD Traffic Division Officer, was with Elliott working on the details of the high school visit. “We want to use our ‘Beat the Heat’ racing for education program to show young people that there are alternatives to drugs and street racing. We want to work with them and get them moving in a positive direction,” Goodsell explained.

Elliott mentioned many of the celebrity endorsements the Fueled by the Fallen organization has received from, among others, Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Arizona Senator John McCain.

“What we really want is an endorsement from the kids we visit,” Elliott added.

“Not only are we honoring those who died Sept. 11, but we’re working with military veterans,” Elliott explained. “Some of us helped feed homeless Vets in the Los Angeles area and took them to the NHRA races. We also help Vets find jobs when they come home from the military.”

“If there are any businesses interested in displaying the car at their location, we’re willing to work with them,” he commented.

According to the Web site www.FueledByTheFallen.org, Howard “challenged himself in 2007 to name just one Hero that had died for his freedom. “I was watching the nightly news as they announced that 12 died this day and 7 that day”, Kevyn said. “I woke up one morning and challenged myself to name just one person who has died for my freedom”, he continued. “I couldn’t.”

From that point, Howard helped design and paint cars that have honored military personnel from all four branches who died in Iraq and Afghanistan, fallen police officers, and others.

If you wish to donate to the program, the organization is a non-profit 501(c)3 charity. Visit www.FueledByTheFallen.org for more information.

IN HONOR OF VETERAN’S DAY- November 11, 2011 (11/11/11)

West Coast Veterans Network members used the Veteran’s Day holiday as an opportunity to showcase a special collection of military and war-related memorabilia from Universal Studios dating back to World War I. Thanks to the team at NBCUniversal Archives & Collections, the memorabilia was at the center of a week-long tribute to our troops that took place outside the Universal Studios commissary in Los Angeles. A war memorial that stood on the Universal lot for many years had a lot of veterans and long-time Universal employees talking. The studio’s archivists recently uncovered and refurbished the memorial, which highlighted the names of Universal employees who fought in World War I, World War II and the Korean conflict. Also featured were a number of classic photographs from military-related Universal events, as well as a uniform display from one of Bob Hope’s USO tours. And the Veterans Network showed a video that included Universal newsreels, current PSA’s and pictures from West Coast Veterans Network events throughout the year. For a look at a portion of the video, please click here: West Coast Veterans Day Video. In addition to the memorabilia, the West Coast team also invited a handful of local military-focused charities to join them on Veteran’s Day, including representatives from Operation Gratitude, Vet Hunters, Wounded Warriors and Fueled by the Fallen. The team from Fueled by the Fallen brought with them two special cars that commemorate 9-11, both emblazoned with the names of those who lost their lives 10 years ago.

Hi Kevyn,

I spoke with you yesterday at Daytona about my friend Charlie. Here is his story.

Charlie (Calixio) Anaya grew up together in Queens. After High School. Charlie was looking for a good, stable job. He knew my father worked for UPS and asked me if he could use my Dad as a reference. My Dad put in a good word for him and he got hired in UPS. Charlie was so excited that he was working for UPS,he loved it. Charlie was also a Marine, he bled red, white and blue. You always knew when Charlie was around, there was always an

American Flag hanging. Charlie and I worked in the same bar together on Saturdays for awhile. We reconnected after going on separate paths in our lives. But the one thing Charlie always said to me every time I saw him. Please tell your Dad I said Thank You for helping him get into UPS, this was even after he had been there for years! Charlie loved his job, he was very dedicated and proud to work for UPS! When Charlie’s name came up to enter the Fire academy, He came to see me to let me know, but most importantly, he wanted to make sure my dad would not be upset with him, that he left UPS to join the Fire Department. I told him that he wouldn’t be upset and to go kick butt.

I moved out of NY in May 2011,  Charlie graduated the academy that summer.

I got a phone call on September 12, 2001 that Charlie had his very first call as a fire fighter, it was the Twin Towers. He went in and never came out! He was a son, a brother, an awesome father, a Marine, UPS employee and a dedicated friend that I will not let anyone forget!

CONCORD, N.C. (March 20, 2009) – A pair of nitro-burning NHRA Funny Cars dedicated to the memory of U.S. military personnel killed in service of their country during the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts will be displayed during the April 2-5 Food Lion AutoFair at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

War memorials take many forms. The Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., are two examples that remind millions of visitors each year that their freedom comes at a very high price. Traditionally, years pass after the end of fighting before such monuments are constructed – the memorial wall listing dead and missing Vietnam soldiers did not open until 1982 – but Kevyn Major Howard wanted to remind the public of the sacrifices military personnel are making right now.
